Because needle felting requires you to repeatedly jab a long, barbed needle into a loose ball of fiber, it is not a great idea to work directly on your lap! Nor is it a very good idea to hold the fiber in your hand as you poke. A thick foam block is recommended to work on. Polyester foam allows the needle to pass through the sculpture and into the foam many times with out dulling or breaking the needle.
