Waxing a Nose

preview
There are as many ways to wax a nose as there are artists. Here is a combination of techniques I've learned from various artists.

Materials
  • Bear with Embroided Nose
  • Beeswax
  • Small cup to melt wax in
  • Paint brush or make-up applicator
  • brown paper (bag)
  • very fine sand paper

Instructions
  1. The simplest way to wax a nose is to run your embroidery yard through the wax prior to embroidering the nose. Beeswax comes in several forms. Shown here is clarified beeswax in a round holder which makes running your yarn through it a bit easier and natural beeswax in bar form. Running your embroidery yarn through beeswax also makes the embroidery thread glide through the fabric without catching or tangling.

  2. To get a really well waxed nose, shave small pieces of beeswax into a small container and melt them in the microwave. A baby food jar in boiling water (like a double boiler) will work too.

  3. When the wax has melted into a liquid, use a paint brush or a sponge make-up applicator to paint the wax onto the nose. Allow the liquid wax to absorb into the fibers of the yarn.
    Step 3

  4. When the wax starts to be a bit lumpy and is not absorbing any longer, use a piece of brown paper bag to buff it down and smooth it out.

  5. If the nose gets too lumpy to buff with brown paper, try a bit of very fine sand paper to smooth it out. Then move on to the brown paper to bring on the shine.

  6. Repeat these steps until you are happy with the thickness and the shine of your waxed nose!
